Danny Ferry

In a surprising and sudden move, Cleveland Cavaliers GM Danny Ferry has resigned from his post.  Ferry became the GM in 2005 and helped form the team that reached at least the second round of the playoffs every year during his tenure, something that wasn’t done by any other team during that period.  Ferry backed Mike Brown, who was recently fired as the Cavs coach, and had a difference of opinion with owner Dan Gilbert on the direction of the team.  So, Ferry resigned before his contract expired on June 30th.  So, how does this affect the re-signing of LeBron James?  Well, if rumors are true, LeBron as part of his re-signing, would help choose the next Cavs coach, and presumably, will be able to do so with the new GM.  It’s just another day in Cleveland sports.

Darrelle Revis

It’s Offseason Training Activity time in pro football and Darrelle Revis is no longer participating in it with the New York Jets.  The NFL’s best cornerback had been attending OTAs before Thursday, which is due to his desire to re-work his current contract, which is a valid want from Revis’ camp.  He’ll be entering the fourth year of a six-year contract that Revis signed during his rookie season.  However, in that time, Revis has undeniably become the top cornerback in the league.  Nnamdi Asomugha of the Oakland Raiders is currently the top-paid corner at $15.2 million a year, an amount that Revis wants to surpass, not by a lot, but more than.  It’s possible that Revis could sit out training camp, which starts on August 1, but a deal should get done beforehand.  However, the crinkle in the negotiations could be the fact that the Jets need to re-sign other players.

Bud Selig

Bud Selig won’t be using his powers as commissioner to overturn an atrocious wrong call by umpire Jim Joyce that ruined the Detroit Tigers’ Armando Galarraga’s perfect pitching performance last night against the Cleveland Indians.  Granted the human element in baseball is a long-standing tradition and part of the reason that gives baseball its appeal, but this was an obvious call.  Everyone saw that Joyce screwed up, Joyce admitted he screwed up, and with the advent of cable and the internet, the proof of the mistake has been seen by millions of people that knew Galarraga was robbed.  Well, it looks like we’ll have to consider this a 28-out perfect game.

Armando GalarragaIf you haven’t heard about Armando Galarraga’s not-quite-perfect game, where have you been? With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, after having retired 26-straight Cleveland Indian hitters, Galarraga’s bid for perfection was denied on a blown call by first base umpire Jim Joyce. A ground ball from Jason Donald was fielded by Miguel Cabrera who threw to Galarraga covering first to beat the runner and the game was over; at least for everybody other than Joyce, who called Donald safe.

Description

Okay, first of all, don’t call this gathering of 2010 NBA free agents - Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Joe Johnson, Chris Bosh, and allegedly Amar’e Stoudemire - a “summit.”  Let’s be clear, they’ll just be talking about one subject, possibly in one location, and discuss their futures.  Yes, this does not sound like a summit at all.  Well, maybe a little.  In any case, it’s amazing that these aforementioned NBA free agents will basically dictate who the next NBA powerhouse will be, particularly if any combination of two players go to one team.  As previously posted here on Endscore, the Cleveland Cavaliers have the edge to re-sign LeBron, so maybe someone like Bosh signs with the Cavs after a sign-and-trade deal is struck. Maybe Amar’e heads from one warm weather climate in Phoenix to another one in Miami.  Who knows what happens, but it’s clear that the players are in control in the NBA.

LeBron James

Well, take heart Cleveland Cavaliers fans, LeBron James has finally spoken about his upcoming NBA free agency and the incumbent team has the edge to re-sign The King.  James spoke with CNN’s Larry King on Tuesday for an interview to appear on Friday, saying, “... you know, this city, these fans, I mean, have given me a lot in these seven years. And, you know, for me, it’s comfortable. So I’ve got a lot of memories here. And—and so it does have an edge.”  This may dampen the spirits of the New York Knicks who have laid it all on the line, suffering through two bad and almost wasted seasons under the current regime of Donnie Walsh and Mike D’Antoni.  The Knicks have purposely traded assets to get under the NBA salary cap in order to sign LeBron and one of the other big NBA free agents - Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Joe Johnson amongst others.  If James does in fact sign with Cleveland, many teams such as the Chicago Bulls and New Jersey Nets, teams with legitimate shots to sign LeBron will need to move on.  For the Knicks, however, how would they?

Zenon KonopkaWhen you look at the list of the most useless NHLers of the 2009-10 season, Tampa Bay’s Zenon Konopka should be right at the top. Konopka led the league in penalty minutes with 265. He only played 602 minutes on the ice. During said ice time, Konopka notched a whopping two goals and three helpers as a forward. The Lightning paid Konopka half a million dollars to be the league’s most useless goon. He didn’t earn any bonuses.

Woes for the O’s

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: MLB,

Ty WiggintonWho needed a day off more than the Baltimore Orioles? Perhaps the rest of baseball. MLB’s worst team by record sat Monday after being swept for the second time this season by the Toronto Blue Jays, the team who many thought would finish behind the O’s in the standings for the first time since 2004. Instead two months into the season, the Jays are 14.5 games ahead. It’s not looking too good for the fortune-telling community.

Steve Yzerman & Jeff VinikThe Red Wing poster boy is swapping in his colors for Lightning silver. The announcement is somewhat surprising because since his retirement in 2006, many thought his appointment as VP of Hockey Operations with Detroit was to be apprentice to GM Ken Holland and would serve as a replacement. But it turns out that’s not the case. Yzerman is moving south and is ready to start the next chapter of his Hall of Fame career.

Eric ChavezVeteran Athletic Eric Chavez’s days may be numbered. The 32-year old third baseman suffered a neck injury and has landed on the disabled list - again - and although he claims he’s not thinking about retiring, he has admitted that this could be it. Chavez has said he’s had neck problems since colliding with minor-league infielder Adrian Cardenas during spring training. Chavez tried to play through it, but the soreness of two bulging discs has caught up with him.
